Windows 2000 users :-(
Hi,
I am not sure whether this is the right place to ask this question, but I could not find any other pages in this website where user can write about his/her questions/help-required. As this is related to Kannada Unicode font, I just decided to write here.
I have been trying to see proper kannada fonts in my browser on Win-2000 OS.
But I am not seeing any relevent help on Win-2000. I see some help on how to key-in in kannada fonts for Win-2000. But I donot see any help on how to see kannada contents displayed in the browser. The software present in alphalinks also talks only about keying in in Kannada (i.e, regional languages).
I have downloaded ubuntu (633 MB).
File name: ubuntu-5.10-preview-install-i386[1].iso
Now my Win-2000 is asking "Click the program you want to use to open this file". Which program should I select?
I searched for Ubuntu couldn't get answer for this. However I found the information that, we need to burn this iso file into a CD. is it really required? I donot have CD writer :-(
I still believe there are lot of Win-2000 users in kannada internet community. For the help of all of them, please provide more support information on Win-2000 support to Unicode kannada in this website.

Re: Win2000 users
ISO means it is the image of the CD. You need to write it to a CD to use. Most CD writing software have an option to write the ISO image. You can not run any application from the ISO image directly.
Regarding your problem of not able to see Kannada Unicode in Win 2000: Which font are you using? Have you installed IE6 with Arabic enabled? Enable Arabic while installing not adding it as a fetaure afterwards.
Just try to browse this page http://www.vishvakannada.com/unicode/unikan.htm. Is it proper?

Kannada Fonts on Windows 2000
Sir,
I have Windows 2000 professional and Firefox ver 1.0.6. I have installed Indic and also Arabic option in Regional Settings- Languages. I have made the tool tip font to Arial Unicode MS in Display Properties-Appearance.
But Still I am not seeing the Kannada Fonts as how it should be...
The glyphs (?) are not properly aligned. Though I can keyin in Kannada, again the font is not shows properly.
Could you please help?

Perhaps try installing Tunga font from any of the windows XP or Server machines?

Firefox doesnot display kannada unicode text properly. So use IE 6.0.

ನಾನು ಸಂಪದದಿಂದ ಏನಾದರು ಕಾಪಿ ಮಾಡಿ Wordನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂಟಿಸಿದರೆ ಅದು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಕಾಣಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ... ಇದನ್ನು ನಾನು ಪ್ರಜಾವಾಣಿಯಿನ್ದಲೂ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಿದೆ... ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣವೆನಿರಬಹುದು ?

'ಸಂಪದ' ಇರೋದು ಯುನಿಕೋಡ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ. ಪ್ರಜಾವಾಣಿ ಇರೋದು ತನ್ನದೇ ಆದ ಎನ್ಕೋಡಿಂಗ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ. ಫೈರ್ ಫಾಕ್ಸು ಯುನಿಕೋಡ್ ಸಪೋರ್ಟ್ ಮಾಡತ್ತೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಪದ ಫೈರ್ ಫಾಕ್ಸ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣತ್ತೆ.

I have become a member to sampada, yesterday itself. I have downloaded Baraha IME from Sampada, but I am unable to write in kannada. I solved the problem this way
I am writing this in English because the question is about Fonts problem in Windows 2000.
In my PC (Win 2000) , I enabled Indic/Arabic, Installed Tunga fonts. Even then the fonts do not appear properly.
This is how I found a way out .
From Sampada I copy the text , In Baraha Input window , I use paste special-Convert UNICODE and then transliterate by CTRL-T , Then I read it properly in the top window.
Windows 2000 users - Problems persists
I have installed baraha 6.0. So all the associated fonts have been installed.
I have installed tunga and mallige fonts.
I am using IE6.0 but arabic is not enabled in that. I tried uninstalling the existing IE (after downloading the IE6.0 setup from Microsoft site) through 'Windows Components' option in control panel. Some processing happened (looked like unistalling). After that it asked me to restart the machine. I opted for restart. But the machine didn't boot again. I got the error "Error: 0x0000000a. The following file is missing:
<windows 2000 root>system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file".
I couldnt get a feasible solution for this problem after searching over the web. It sounded like, I need to have Windows 2000 installation CD, which I do not have.
Finally, I handed over the machine to a technisian and he removed the harddisk and placed in another machine. Ran checkdisk (chkdsk) over the harddisk. That fixed the corrupted kernel file. I have got my machine back in working condition and it does boot properly now.
IE is not unistalled and hence not reinstalled. So, arabic support is still not enabled.
Kannada fonts still look like how it was before I did all these. I can read them with some difficulty, but they are not aligned properly.
Is there any 2000 user who has successfully changed the arabic support from disabled to enabled? and if that solved the problem of seeing the proper Kannada fonts?

Windows 2000 Kannada Unicode Problem Solved!!
After a long wait, finally I got a solution(from www.kannadigaru.com forum) without needing Windows 2000 installation CD.
Solution is based on information present in this page:

Whichever application needs to render the unicode kannada will need to have 1)Tunga.ttf (a true type kannada font) and 2) Uniscribe Unicode script processor (usp10.dll)
Just a two simple steps.
1. Copy C:\windows\fonts\Tunga.ttf from a Windows XP machine and paste into your Windows 2000 fonts directory, C:\WINNT\Fonts.
2. Copy C:\windows\system32\usp10.dll from Windows XP machine and paste into your Windows 2000 Internet Explorer direcotry, C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer.
You can use Windows XP machine of your friends, colleauges, relatives to get above two files. Or you can download those two files from here:

Note: Since you are placing usp10.dll only in IE executables directory, the unicode kannada renders properly in IE only. See the above aksharamala page for more details on display in all the applications.

In this internet cafe, most of the systems have win98se.. and soem have winXP.
Yesterday i used a win98 system. I downloaded some fonts and then the kannada fonts were displayed. I used Mozilla Firefox. But the fonts were not arranged properly.
So can you please tell me the steps to display Kannada unicode fonts properly in firefox under win98.
And also the firefox is also not displaying kannada fonts properly in winXP also (now im using winXP)
HPN: you said that sampada recomends UBUNTU. Can i recommend this internet centre to use UBUNTU instead of this ** windows operating systems? can it be used by common people easily?
Now i have 3 questions:
1. how to display kannada fonts in firefox under win98
2. how to display kannada fonts under winXP.

As of now, I don't think Firefox is equipped to show you Kannada Unicode properly on Win98 and Win2000. Try with IE.
check this link. If that doesn't solve the issue, read back the above document - you might've missed something.

3 steps to enable kannada unicode font in windows 2000 provided version of your IE is IE6.0
1) Enable indic support (this step is given in detail in the above post)
2) get TUNGA.TTF font and paste in WINNT-->FONTS folder. get tunga.ttf from this link

First i had enabled indic support, and also copied unicode font, i could see kannada font but it wasnt proper,words like " nimma" not shown properly. After copying USP10.DLL to Program Files-->Internet Explorer folder it worked, now i can see kannada fonts same way as in windows XP

ಹೌದು, ಉಬುಂಟುವಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ಇದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಸುನಿಲ್ ಮೋಹನ್ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದಿರುವ ಕಾಮೆಂಟನ್ನೂ ಓದಿ. ಈ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ದಿನ ಜಿಗ್ಸಾ ಪಝಲ್ಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೋಗಿರುವ ಆದರೆ ಸೇರಿಸಲಾಗದ ತುಣುಕಿನಂತಾಗಿ ಹೋಗಿತ್ತು. ಫ್ರೀ-ಫಾಂಟ್ಸ್ ಪ್ಯಾಕೇಜಿನಲ್ಲೂ ಸರಿಪಡಿಸಿದ ನಂತರ ಪ್ರೈಯಾರಿಟಿ ಗೊಂದಲ ಮತ್ತೆ ಬಂದೊದಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಒಟ್ಟಾರೆ, ಸದ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಸುಲಭ ಉಪಾಯ ನಾನು ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದುದು ಇದೆ:
"ಎಲ್ಲ ಫಾಂಟುಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದು ಹಾಕಿ ತುಂಗಾ ಅಥವ ಕೇದಗೆ ಫಾಂಟನ್ನು ಹಾಕಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಿಡಿ" ಎಂದು. ಪ್ರೈಯಾರಿಟಿ ಹೇಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಸರಿಪಡಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತದೆ, ಜೊತೆಗೆ ತುಂಗಾ ಹಾಗೂ ತಕ್ಕಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಕೇದಗೆ ಬೇರೆ ಫಾಂಟುಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಚೆಂದ ಕಾಣುತ್ತವೆ.

ನನಗೆ ಸಂಪದದಿಂದ ಬರಹ ಪ್ಯಾಡ್ ಗಾಗಲೀ,wordಗಾಗಲೀ ಕಾಪಿ ಮಾಡಲಾಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ತಿಳಿಸಿ.
ಉ: ಸಂಪದದಿಂದ ಕಾಪಿ ಮಾಡಲಾಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ
ನಾನು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಿ ನೋಡಿಲ್ಲ ಹಾಗೂ ನೋಡಲಾಗದು (ವಿಂಡೋಸ್ ಗೆ ಈಗ ರಿಬೂಟ್ ಆಗಬೇಕೆಂದರೆ ಗೋಳು), ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಖರೆಯಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಲಾಗದು. ಪೇಸ್ಟ್ ಮಾಡಿದ ಮೇಲೆ textಗೆ ತುಂಗಾ ಫಾಂಟ್ ಸೆಲೆಕ್ಟ್ ಮಾಡಿ ನೋಡಿ.
