Translation Drive
-------------------------
The Sampada Translation Drive (http://translate.sampada.net/) was started with an intention to get the User Interface of Open source applications (and in large, Linux) translated completely to Kannada. The web based application lets you translate keywords from English to Kannada and suggest the best alternatives for usage of terms. Here's your chance to put your familiarity of the language to a great use!

We invite all Sampada users to take part and help localizing Linux to Kannada. Featured this week is the GUI installer for debian (debian-installer.pot).

Lets get ourselves ready for 'all Kannada' emails

Ever wanted to converse in Kannada using Kannada script on emails? Ever felt that zeal to write in your own language to your friends and relatives? well, its something that you can do very easily now.
Here's how:
A) If you're using webmail (services like yahoo, gmail), set the default character set to utf-8 in your mail options. (It has been reported that Yahoo doesn't support Unicode, if someone does get utf-8 working on it, do leave a message on Sampada). Gmail is your best buddy for utf-8 mails as of now.

B) If you're using a mail client like thunderbird or Outlook, utf-8 is enabled by default. If it isn't enabled, look for language preferences on the respective mail client's configuration.

You can use the regular way to type Unicode (Baraha Direct or any other Input Method) on both. For more details on how to key in in Unicode, check http://sampada.net/fonthelp

Lets get ready for utf-8 mails. We can probably have newsletters in complete Kannada if all the members start using utf-8 supported mail services or clients.

Taking part in the initiative

As you all know, 'Sampada' was started with the sole intention of encouraging people to write in Kannada, read Kannada and converse in Kannada. You too can take part in this initiative by scribbling in Kannada on Sampada. Add your articles, poems, cartoons, opinions, thoughts or share your views on the work, write-ups added on Sampada. Encourage others to write in Kannada, as well.

Hosting costs real money, and a portal like Sampada does require quite a lot of bandwidth and maintenance.
