ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೂ ಸಂದ ಗೌರವ: ತುಂಗಾ ಫಾಂಟನ್ನು ಪರಿಷ್ಕರಿಸಲು ಮುಂದೆ ಬಂದಿರುವ ಮೈಕ್ರೋಸಾಫ್ಟ್

 ಗೆಳೆಯರೆ,

 Personal Computing  ಗೆ ಅಗತ್ಯ ತಂತ್ರಾಂಶಗಳನ್ನು ಪೂರೈಸುವ ಅಗ್ರಗಣ್ಯ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ, ಮೈಕ್ರೋಸಾಫ್ಟಿನ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ಆಪರೇಟಿಂಗ್ ಸಿಸ್ಟಂ ವಿಂಡೋಸ್ XP. ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡವೂ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಇತರ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಭಾಷೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಗಳು ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಒಂದು ಆವೃತ್ತಿ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಹಿಂದೆ ಕನ್ನಡವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಲು ಪರಿಮಿತ ಸೌಲಭ್ಯವಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಈಗಿನ ಆವೃತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸೌಲಭ್ಯಗಳು ಇವೆ ಎಂದು ಬೀಗುತ್ತ, 'ತುಂಗಾ' ಫಾಂಟಿನಲ್ಲಿಯ ದೋಷಗಳನ್ನು ಅವರು ಕಡೆಗಣಿಸಿದ್ದರು...ಒಂದು ರೀತಿಯ ಉದಾಸೀನತೆಯಿಂದ....ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ.ಕಾಂ ನ ಶೇಖರ್‍ಪೂರ್ಣರವರು ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಾಕಿದ ಸಂವಾದಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರತಿಯಾಗಿ ಮೈಕ್ರೋಸಾಫ್ಟಿನವರು 'ತುಂಗೆ'ಯನ್ನು ಪರಿಷ್ಕರಿಸಿ ಎಲ್ಲ ಅಧಿಕೃತ XP ಬಳಕೆದಾರರಿಗೆ ಲಭ್ಯವಾಗುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಭರವಸೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮುಂದೆ ಬಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ದಿನದ ಟೈಮ್ಸ್ ಆಫ್ ಇಂಡಿಯಾ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಆವೃತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದರ ಕುರಿತಾದ ಲೇಖನ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದರ ಕೊಂಡಿಯನ್ನು ಕೆಳಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇನೆ.

ಹಿಂದೆ ಈ ವಿಚಾರದ ಚರ್ಚೆಯನ್ನು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದ್ದು ನಂತರ ನನ್ನ ಗ್ರಹಿಸುವಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆದ ತಪ್ಪಿನಿಂದಾಗಿ ಎಲ್ಲ ಪತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆಯಲು ನಿರ್ವಾಹಕರನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಾಯಿತು. ಇದರಿಂದಾದ ಗೊಂದಲಕ್ಕೆ ಕ್ಷಮೆ ಕೋರುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಹಾಗೇ ಚರ್ಚೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗಿಯಾದ ಎಲ್ಲ ಗೆಳೆಯರಿಗೂ ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು. ಸಂಪದಕ್ಕೆ ಆಭಾರಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದೇನೆ.

Microsoft works out win-win situation To Release New Version Of Tunga By Prashanth G N/TNN

Bangalore: It’s a win-win situation for software giant Microsoft and the country’s only literary webjournal kannadasaahithya.com. In a quick and positive response to an online debate initiated last week on the bugs in Kannada font Tunga, Microsoft has decided to release a new version of the font.

    The new font is expected to eliminate problems that would result in grammatical errors. Microsoft’s initiative will make Kannada computing easier and ensure sustenance of Kannada literature on the webjournal.

    The new version will be an “improvised version’’ of the font that is being provided with Windows Server 2003. It “will be accessible by XP users as well.’’ The font has been functioning well with Windows Server 2003, but has been causing errors on XP.

    A Microsoft official says: “With the aim of further enhancing its (Tunga’s) relevance for the Kannada user community, we plan to soon release a new version of the same that has been developed on the basis of feedback received from our users and Kannada linguists and language experts.

    This new version is already being provided with Windows Server 2003 and we plan to soon ensure its availability for the broad user community as well.’’

    Microsoft’s initiative is part of its larger India localisation program, Project Bhasha. The project is looking to intensify local language computing and ensure that Windows and Office become available in 14 Indian languages. To make the localisation a success and to develop and validate local products, Microsoft is in constant collaboration with the Indian government and local language community and experts. Microsoft says it sources feedback from the user community and language experts. Tunga’s improvisation, they say, is an effort to offer better value and functionality.

Quick action: The debate was initiated by kannadasaahithya.com fo u n d e r- e d i t o r Shekar Poorna on the net on baraha.com, sampada.net, groups.yahoo.com/g roup/kannadasaahithya. The debate as well as details of the bugs in the font were also posted on Microsoft’s open forum for discussion bhashaindia.com.

    The debate also involved Seshadri Vasu, the developer of Kannada’s most popular software Baraha. He too listed bugs in the font Tunga on the website baraha.com. While the postings on the bugs and the debate were removed from the open forum, Microsoft acted quickly.

    Shekar observes: “I am glad they have taken note of the problem and are coming forward to make Tunga font available to Windows XP users too. I hope they will act soon in this regard.’’

A buginfected and defective Kannada font is not just making Kannada computing cumbersome, but also slowing down development of the country’s first literary web journal, Kannadasahitya.com. The existing Kannada font, Thunga, does not recognise a certain set of characters/alphabets, thus leading to errors. The font defects persist in Windows XP. Though Microsoft brought out two service packs to correct the defective font, it did not work. “The mistakes continue to occur. The font defects have been corrected on Windows 2003. But users of XP would have to spend again to install Windows 2003. Also, why would anyone want to go back to an earlier version from a later version?” says Shekar Poorna, founder-editor of Kannadasahitya.com. The font’s defects are making data construction and portability in Kannada very difficult. But Microsoft India senior manager, localisation, Raveesh Gupta asserts that there is no defect. “It is possible that a user is utilising an earlier version of Thunga. We recommend they use the later versions. As per our feedback, there are no errors in the font. In fact, we have upgraded the font for the Windows 2003 version itself and it works perfectly. We suggest that the font in that version be used though we should say we have received no complaints on its functioning in XP too.” What’s hindering Kannada data construction on the web is also the lack of Optical Character Facility (OCR) in operating systems for Kannada. For example, a book in English scanned under OCR can be stored as an image and then be converted into text because the OCR recognises English language. A book in Kannada scanned under OCR can be stored only as an image, but not be converted into text.” “If we cannot scan books, we can only type them in. You can imagine how many thousands of characters we need to type in to upload Kannada works. It involves enormous labour and time,” says Shekar. However, Diwakar, a techie observes: “If the scanner recognises Kannada, you can just cut-and-paste books. It will reduce work and speed up uploading process.” Shekar observes that OCR for Kannada does not exist either in Windows or Linux and that only one private facility may have been developed in IISc. He believes if certain software applications or tools are not developed for a language, its literature is bound to suffer. I have got no inhibition in acknowledging microsofts policy of creating regional language environment in computing area. My problem with Win xp is consistent, and I waited for it to get fixed in service packs. But even after service pack 2, Ithe problem with the font has been igored and Kannada language has got totally sidelined by Microsoft. ಮೈಕ್ರೋಸಾಫ್ಟಿನವರು ಕನ್ನಡ ತುಂಗಾ ಫಾಂಟನ್ನು ತಂದು ಬರಹಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ತಿರುವನ್ನೇ ಇತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ಹೊಸ ಅವತರಣಿಕೆ ಬಂದ ಮೇಲೆ ಎಲ್ಲೋ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ತಪ್ಪು ನುಸುಳಿದೆ. ಶೇಕಡ ೯೯ ಸರಿ ಇದ್ದ ಮೇಲೆ ಉಳಿದೆ ಶೇಕಡ ೧ ಕೂಡಾ ಸರಿಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಚಂದವಿರುತ್ತದೆ.

ನಾನು ನನ್ನ ದಿನನಿತ್ಯದ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಗೆ ತುಂಗಾಳನ್ನು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವೆ. ನನಗೆ ತೊಂದರೆ ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಯಾರಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಗೆ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.

ಶ್ರೀ ಶೇಖರ್‍ಪೂರ್ಣ ಅವರು ಇದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಮನವಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ನಾವೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಅವರ ಕೈ ಜೋಡಿಸಿ ತುಂಗಳನ್ನು ಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಜಾಣೆಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸೋಣ. ಈ ಕೆಲಸದ ಹಿಂದೆ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರೇ ಇದ್ದಾರೆ - ಮೈಕ್ರೋಸಾಫ್ಟಿನವರಿಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಬರುವ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಕನ್ನಡ ಬಲ್ಲವರೇ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ನಮ್ಮ ಕಷ್ಟವನ್ನು ಅರಿಯಲು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಶ್ರಮ ವಹಿಸಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ.
